Established by the Spanish in 1565, St Augustine, Florida serves as the United States oldest continuously occupied city. Wendy and I enjoyed seeing many historic sites that the city has to offer as well as the beautiful beaches.
The Ponce de Leon’s Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park is a must see. Of course you have to get a drink of the water from the fountain and see if you can stay young forever! A novelty, yes, but fun to do. The planetarium was interesting as the show there explained how early explorers used the constellations to guide their long voyages at sea. And don’t miss the historical show next to the water. It presented full regalia outfits of actors with the history of the landing topped off by the firing of a cannon.
The fort was also interesting. The Castillo de San Marcos National monument was built by the Spanish to defend Florida and the Atlantic trade route. It featured rangers in period dress that had demonstrations on forming muskets and cannons. They will also answer questions for you about the fort and share stories about the people that lived there during that time.
Wendy and I enjoy visiting lighthouses and the St Augustine lighthouse was exceptional. The view from the top was spectacular as we were able to see the beautiful landscape and water. There was a maritime museum which included children’s activities and the keepers’ house on the property.
The architecture at Flagler College was also something to see. It was formerly a luxury hotel built in 1888 by Henry Flagler. Tours are available and allow guests to explore the courtyard while learning of the hotel’s Spanish Renaissance architecture, visit the grand lobby, dining rooms, grand parlor, and immaculate grounds. All unmistakably revival, ornate, hand-painted, and carved. Also, take a stroll to see the oldest home in America, the González–Álvarez House, with a construction history dating to about 1723.
A beach day is always in order! This beach had a beachfront park, splash park, volleyball court and fishing pier. There are many restaurants nearby as well.
We stayed at Stagecoach RV Park. It was a good full hookup park that was clean and quiet. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The spaces were gravel but well packed. It was about 15-20 minutes from town with easy access to I-95.
With another RV adventure in the books, we hope you will continue to follow us as we head to Tampa, Florida. See you soon!!
