The Outer Banks of North Carolina are considered barrier islands to the mainland offering 100+ miles of shoreline. They were connected by bridges. There were several quaint small towns to visit along the way.
We were able to see expansive views of the beaches and the Atlantic Ocean along the way. It felt so very open and free as there weren’t high rise condos and houses along the beach. There were a few things for the kids to enjoy.
While visiting we had the opportunity to see the Wright Brothers National Memorial at Kill Devils Hill. The replica of the plane was very interesting. We were able to walk along the first flight path they took in 1903. It was definitely worth the visit to see where they were determined to make a plane fly.
As I have often shared, we love lighthouses. The Cape Hatteras lighthouse was spectacular! Although there had been a previous lighthouse on the property, it was deemed ineffective. The newer one was built in 1870. It is the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States.
We camped at Cape Hatteras RV Resort and Campground. It had great views and was simply located. A picnic lunch is always in order with us. 😀
On our return trip home we wanted to make a stop or two. We stopped in Durham, NC to visit Duke University. The architecture and grounds were beautiful.
And then in Asheville, NC, The Biltmore Estate was stunning! George Vanderbilt II built the mansion between 1889 and 1895 and it is the largest privately owned house in the United States. We took the guided tour and enjoyed seeing the many rooms throughout. Outside the gardens and planetarium were beautiful as well as the view of the mountains. We would recommend this stop when you are in the area.
Time to head back home to Sweet Home Alabama. Happy trails and we will see you next month…..
