Hilton Head Island, South Carolina has been trademark registered as “America’s Favorite Island”.
Along with the white sand beaches there are an abundance of beautiful live oak trees on the island. Known as the “low country” we really enjoyed the lush landscapes and beaches. There were many great bicycling trails we took advantage of. If you need to rent a bike there were several bicycle shops on the island with available rentals. We chose Cross Island Bikes, biking was a big part of our trip.
The Harbour Town Lighthouse at Hilton Head harbor is stunning. It’s was one the prettiest Wendy and I have seen. It is privately owned and was built in 1970. There are no shortage of golf courses on the island. Twenty-six world class championship ones to be exact. Whether you are a novice or experienced they allow to reserve a tee time.
As you know from previous post, we love the beach. Even though it is an affluent area, there are public beaches available.
One of our favorite times of the day is the “golden hour” which includes the setting of the sun.
During our stay we took a short drive over to Savannah, Georgia. Considered the “friendly city”, we did encounter many welcoming people there. It is a historic and charming town which is said to have a few ghost. We enjoyed Forsyth Park with the many Spanish moss draped trees and the recognizable fountain you see in pictures.
We took the Old Town Trolley narrated tour around Savannah. The driver/narrator was very knowledgeable of the history and had a few ghost stories and jokes to tell along the way. We highly recommend the tour when visiting here.
We stayed outside of Hilton Head at Bluffton which was about a 30 minutes drive in. The Stoney Crest Plantation campground was an older RV park but more affordable than the available parks on the island. The campground was no frills but quiet and well maintained. There were full hookups.
We will talk to you on the next post as we travel north to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Happy Trails!!!
